No, that’s not a stick in the sugar jar; it’s one of two whole vanilla beans that live in there. I’m working on tomorrow’s project post, so today I just thought I would share this handy trick that I learned from watching too much Food Channel. Whether you store your sugar in a canister on the counter, or in the bag in the pantry, you can give a fun lift to all of your sweet recipes by hiding a whole vanilla bean in with it. I’m pretty sure I picked this up from Alton Brown. Every time I open the jar, this really terrific waft of vanilla sweetness comes at me. You should try it–I think you’ll like it!
